Obituary for Karl Thomas
Karl Warren Thomas, affectionately known as “K.W.”, age 89, of Palatka, passed away peacefully Tuesday at his home with his daughter, Kimberly and grandson Trace Thomas at his side. “K.W.” was born in Palatka to the late Alfred and Elizabeth Thomas and attended school here in Palatka. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed aboard the USS Savannah during World War II. Following his time in the service, “K.W.” worked 41 years at Georgia Pacific as a millwright. In 1947 the married Mildred Herring and raised their family. His lifelong interest in aviation began as a boy when he watched Navy Pilots practice take offs and landings at the Sawyer Airfield near his home on Moody Road. “K.W.” loved all aspects of nature - forests, rivers, animals, fish, plants, birds and never ceased to marvel at the Earth’s beauty. He was also a talented artist. “K.W.” was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Elizabeth Thomas, his oldest brother, Oliver P. Thomas, a daughter, Holly B. Thomas and a grandson, Thomas Sebastian Holt.
“K.W.” is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred Herring Thomas, his children, Tina Gray of North Carolina, Frank Thomas of Louisiana and Kimberly Holliman of Palatka, 2 grandsons, Trace Thomas and “K.C” Holliman (Chrissy) of Virginia and a brother, Doyle Thomas of Georgia.
No time on Earth is long enough to share with loved ones or to prepare our hearts for goodbye.
